About

A studio that starts with looking

Sasaki Garden Studio is a design and build studio in Southeast Portland. Kimiko Sasaki founded it after years of building gardens for other people's plans.

Kimiko grew up in Portland in a Japanese American family that kept a small yard the slow way: one stone moved at a time, one tree pruned a little each year. The studio works the same way. We design and build fewer gardens, and we stay with them through their first year.

Who you will meet

Eight people work here. These three lead the work you will see most.

  • Kimiko Sasaki

    Founder and lead designer

Kimiko draws every plan and walks every first visit. She is the one to talk to about how the garden should feel.

  • Kenta Miyamoto

    Lead stonemason

Kenta chooses and sets the stone. He moves a boulder until it sits right, and he will ask you to look at it from the house.

  • Hana Maeda

    Planting and pruning lead

Hana plants, prunes and teaches the seasonal care. She leaves you with notes for what to do between visits.
